Sherry was born in Port Angeles, Washington and raised in Carmel, Indiana. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education (double major in Spanish and French with a minor in History) from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1966, in addition to completing various extended foreign language courses at Wabash College, Ball State University, Indiana University and the University de Las Americas in Mexico City. The years prior to her entering the real estate profession were spent as a Spanish and French teacher in the secondary school system, as a Legislative Assistant to a United States Congressman in Washington, D.C., and as a housewife and mother. She is a member of Alpha Phi International Sorority. She and her husband, John, are golfing members at Chartwell Country Club and have served on numerous committees at the Club. They have three daughters, one son and two adorable little Bichon Frises.
